We will have several demonstrations including: blacksmith skills, rope making, grist mill operation, antique engine operation, basket weaving, wood lathe operation, chair caning, spinning, antique gas engine operation, painting, broom making, antique tractor operation, wood carving, and soap making. The market will be hosting a blood drive on Saturday, August 22nd. We’ve partnered with St. Andrew’s and the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center to hold the drive from 9-12 in the fellowship hall.
The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center provides donor and blood services to Mercy Hospital Jefferson just down the road. The blood donations won’t just go to the hospital though, and we’re excited to be hosting our first blood drive with a regional agency that serves much of the greater St. Louis area.

Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center is the exclusive provider of blood products and services to 88 hospitals in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin. The Blood Center is based in Davenport, Iowa, where MVRBC’s testing, processing and primary distribution center handles more than 250,000 units of blood components each year. MVRBC is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. MVRBC collects blood at 19 fixed site donor centers and at more than 4,000 mobile blood drives held each year. The population of the Blood Center’s service region exceeds 4-million residents and donors give more than 180,000 donations each year.Blood donations are used to treat many illnesses, not just the car crash victims that come to mind first. In fact, blood transfusions are given for a host of different illnesses, including kidney disease, cancer, pernicious anemia, and hemophilia, and is commonly needed after surgeries.

National Eat Your Vegetables Day
Today is National Eat Your Vegetables Day! Since June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month, it only makes sense to celebrate these fine, healthy foods.
Enjoy vegetables as part of a meal or as a snack. For more information about nutritional content of various vegetables, check out this chart from the FDA. Just imagine! If you had a leaf lettuce salad with cauliflower, you’d have met your Vitamin A and Vitamin C recommendations for the day. Not to mention the other minerals that are contained in vegetables that help promote healthy skin and hair and can boost your immune system.
It is recommended by the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans, to consume 3 to 5 servings of vegetables per day. For most vegetables, one serving is 1/2 to 1 cup and can be eaten either raw or cooked.
So here’s to shopping at the DeSoto Farmers’ Market and healthy eating on National Eat Your Vegetables Day!
Adopt-a-Highway Clean-Up Scheduled
Saturday, May 9th is a clean-up day for the market’s Adopt-a-Highway stretch. It will begin at 1:00 PM and everyone is invited to help.
The market adopted the stretch on Highway 110 just east of town a couple of years ago, but Missouri’s Adopt-a-Highway program has been around since the late ’80s. Per MoDOT’s website, there are currently more than 4,700 groups and 47,000 volunteers in the program making Missouri’s roadsides cleaner and more attractive.
So, what do we do with our adopted road? Adopters have the option to clean up litter, mow, beautify through landscaping, or plant native grasses and flowers. We clean up litter. The litter picked up through this program statewide allows MoDOT to direct its resources to other necessary tasks.
The weather is supposed to be warm, but there’s a potential for rain; about 40%. Be sure to check our Facebook page for any updates in case of inclement weather. If you’d like more information about adopting a highway, click on the photo above.
Coming to the Market!
This Saturday, May 9th will bring something different to the market. Amber Henry will be cooking brats & hamburgers. Sides will also be available. If you’re looking to get a breakfast brat, you’ll need to wait until 9 AM because that’s when they’ll begin selling them.
