Children’s Physical Activity
Everyone knows that physical activity is important for overall health. Children are not excluded either. They benefit from physical activity just as adults do and in other ways that are just being explored by researchers.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, regular exercise helps children form good habits that will carry over into adulthood. In addition, kids who are habitually physically active tend to have
- Stronger bones and joints
-
Greater muscle strength
-
A decrease in body fat
-
Improved flexibility
-
A healthier cardiovascular system
-
A reduced likelihood of developing diabetes
-
More energy
-
A greater ability to handle stress
-
Improvements in self-confidence and self-esteem
-
Greater social acceptance by physically active peers
-
Opportunities to make new friends
-
Better concentration at school
These are kind of the…yeah, yeah, yeah. Everybody knows this…sort of thing. However, new research is showing that regular exercise also helps kids with ADHD.

According to Alan Smith from Michigan State University and Betsy Hoza from the University of Vermont, preliminary results show marked improvements in behavior for kids with ADHD who participate in a 20-minute workout before school. And the Cards Keep Going!
With the Cardinals win last night, they get to advance to the NLCS and face the Giants on Saturday. It’s a great time to be a Cardinals’ fan!
Quick Interesting Fact: The use of science to improve parts of baseball is nothing new, but some teams are taking it to new heights. Check this out for an interesting take on using neuroscience to improve hitting. Considering there were 540 pitches thrown at Cardinals’ batters during the division series, it’s no wonder that some teams are looking at how to improve hitting percentages by looking at reaction times. Is it working? Well, the jury is still out. The Cardinals seem to be doing just fine, and they haven’t signed onto this sort of training…yet?
Upcoming Area 5Ks
With fall comes beautiful weather…weather that makes strolling through the parks or sprinting through the streets (not to be confused with flashing) so much more enjoyable. There are several opportunities coming up that allow you to do that and to raise money for local organizations too. Here’s some brief information about what’s in store.
The 2014 DeSoto Goes Pink 5K will be October 18th at Spross Park. You can check out their Facebook page or click on the link below for the registration form. Funds raised go to assist those who are battling breast cancer by providing free or low-cost mammograms, gas cards, help with utility bills, and other assistance, primarily to those who don’t qualify for other programs. And you guessed it, the money is used locally!
2014 DeSoto Goes Pink Registration
The 2014 Vineland 5K will be November 1st. The purpose of the race is to promote a healthy lifestyle while raising money for Angie’s Hope Foundation, which is a local scholarship program. You can contact Amanda at the school (636-586-1010) for more information or just get the registration form using the link below.
Other races abound too, but these are local. If you want something that will provide a little drive and change in scenery, you might check out a Turkey Trot (11/27/2014) or the Making Strides of St. Louis (10/25/2014).
It’s that time of year again…
No, silly! Not for Christmas (not yet, at least); for your flu shot. If you haven’t already got your flu shot and you plan to, now’s the time.
