- Poinsettias were first introduced in this country in 1928. Today they are grown in all 50 states. Over $220 million worth of poinsettias are sold during the holiday season.
- The first American Christmas Tree wasn’t a tree at all. It was a wooden pyramid covered with evergreen boughs and decorated with apples. Today more than 35 million Christmas Trees are produced each year.
- The holiday season is the busiest time of the year for the postal service. Last year over 20 billion cards, letters and packages were sent during this time.
Winter Flakes Run Date
The Winter Flakes 10K/5K/1Mile Event will be held March 1, 2014. The rally point will again this year be at the south end of Walther Park. This is a great event, although it was snowing this past winter! The money goes to support Get Healthy DeSoto and the many programs that we do throughout the community.

9th Annual Better Body Challenge
It’s the day after Thanksgiving. How do you feel?
9th Annual Better Body Challenge is a 12 week weight-loss competition sponsored by Get Healthy DeSoto. The kick-off & health fair at the De Soto Community Center will be January 16th from 5:00-7:30 p.m. Final Weigh-in will be April 10th.
The cost includes attendance at the health fair, bi-weekly weigh-ins, bi-weekly group workouts, a t-shirt, introduction to a personnel trainer, nutritional info, support & encouragement. The cost to participate is $25.00. Questions? Call Debby 586-4570.
Christmas Home Tour
Don’t forget that the GHD Christmas Home Tour is Saturday, November 30th. There are 9 properties on the tour this year, and the event goes from 9 AM until 3:30 PM. The six lovely homes are diverse and there is sure to be something to dazzle anyone who attends. In addition to the homes, First United Methodist Church, the DeSoto Community Center, and the Villa’s will also be on display.
Advanced tickets are $15. If you wait until the 30th, they’ll be $18. Tickets are available at Cherished Memories, City Hall, the Library, Drummonds, First State Community Bank, Heartland Realty, Lorenzo’s & Pogolinos. You can also pick them up from any Home Tour Committee Member that you may know.
